The FPS Self-Directed Academy (SDA) is now enrolling students in Grades 5-8 for Fall 2025. Students who may be a good fit for SDA possess intrinsic motivation to learn, set personal goals, and take ownership of their own learning. The SDA learning model is built on the principle that learning should be self-directed, competency-based, and not confined by traditional time constraints.

March is Music in Our Schools Month. FPS traditionally has had and continues to cultivate an especially strong music program, so strong that it has been named one of the National Association of Music Merchants' “Best Communities for Music Education” for 15 consecutive years and 21 out of the last 25. Because of the dedication of all stakeholders associated with FPS, our students continue to be recipients of and active participants in high-quality, robust, rigorous, and enriching music experiences.

Self-Directed Academy

The Self-Directed Academy (SDA) puts each student in the driver's seat of their own education. With an instructional model built on self-paced learning, flexible scheduling, technology integration, STEM, and project-based learning, students determine their own educational path with guidance from educators. SDA is best-suited for independent learners who benefit from in-person contact.

The Fargo Public Schools Self-Directed Academy opened in August 2024.

Our instructional model is built on the principle that learning should be self-directed, competency-based, and not restricted by the traditional time, place, path and pace constraints. We emphasize mastery of concepts through personalized learning pathways facilitated by students, teachers and cutting-edge technology. Motivated, independent learners who are seeking opportunities to excel academically will find the learning experience at Self-Directed Academy to be a good fit.

The academy differs from the traditional school model families are accustomed to in our Fargo schools.

Self-Directed Academy is adding grade 5 for the 2025-26 school year! Student registration for fall 2025 is now open for grades 5-8.
